Retrofit and Renewal
A massive seismic retrofit program costing over $400 million reinforced the bridge’s ability to withstand a major earthquake on the nearby San Andreas Fault. The bridge district embraced new tolling technology, eliminating human toll collectors in favor of all-electronic collection. The 75th anniversary celebration in 2012 drew global attention and reaffirmed the bridge’s status as one of humanity’s greatest engineering achievements.
In 2013, the Golden Gate Bridge eliminated all human toll collectors, becoming the first major U.S. bridge to go fully electronic — ending a 76-year tradition.
A 3,500-ton moveable concrete barrier finally ended decades of fatal head-on collisions on the bridge's undivided roadway.
